FSA - Retail Conduct Risk Outlook 2011

Notices & News

The Liverpool based firm of Nationwide Digital Satellite Warranty Services Ltd, its sister company Digital Satellite Warranty Cover and an associated partnership called Satellite Services have all stopped trading.

Welcome

This web site allows you to find out the details of most specific independent companies offering service agreements, extended warranties, insurance and other repair products for domestic Sky digital systems. You can find out what Companies House says about these companies and even what they might have to say about themselves.

Simply click on the ‘Company List’ link on the left to see an alphabetical list of the companies. You can then select whichever company you are looking for from the list and it will show you the official details from Companies House and other publicly available information.

SkyWarrantyCompare.com is an information service only and does not offer any warranty product or endorse any particular product or service.

Sky

It should be noted that Sky’s own service plan is actually a commercial arrangement with an insurance company called Domestic & General who pay Sky for their customer data and who also pay Sky for the benefit of using the Sky name and logo.

That goes some way to explain why the Domestic & General plan is one of the most expensive in the market. It is a good plan in the right circumstances but there are other plans that seem better value for money and are less restrictive.

Financial Services Authority

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) is the regulator of the financial services industry in the UK including insurance services. By statute, the FSA does not govern non-insurance companies.

There are some companies in the Sky warranty sector who have chosen to go down the insurance route and have become insurance brokers under the FSA’s Appointed Representative Network scheme. In their latest Retail Conduct Risk Outlook, the FSA  have warned that this network arrangement “presents a potentially growing risk of consumer detriment”. Compliancy Services LLP have published an interesting article about it on their website.

Here is a list of companies who are registered with the FSA under this network arrangement.

Not Recommended

It would be unfair to their existing customers to actually name and shame the companies that fit into this category but here is a general list of the type of companies we think should be avoided.

You can also click here for a short list of plan exclusions that we think should be avoided.

Any company that does not appear in our ‘Live Companies’ listing

(Many companies in the Sky repair industry work with us and contact us regularly to ensure that their listings are accurate and updated. Some do not join in at all - and unfortunately a few companies have actively chosen to work against us and have demanded their information be removed from our website. You might ask yourself why they would do that. In any case, we think any company that hides from scrutiny or comparison should be avoided. Also, any new company that we do not yet know about could contact us for a listing. If they have not done so, why not?)

Any company using a name that is shown as ‘Closed Down’ in our listings

(This might seem obvious but we have had reports of telesales calls where the the company first introduces itself using the name of a ‘closed’ company. We think it may be a ploy to avoid problems with the Telephone Preference Service when running a

cold-calling telesales campaign)

Any company with enforceable insurance type contracts that cannot be freely cancelled without penalty

(You might want to cancel at any time and for any number of reasons. Some insurance companies will go to great contractual lengths to stop you - especially if you want to switch to another provider. Always check the small print in the terms and conditions)

Any company who charges an administration fee for cancelling a plan at any time

(We do not think this is fair on the consumer)

Any company asking for payment in advance for a 2 or 3 year policy

(This is one of our pet hates. Please do not gamble your money on whether that company will still be around in two or three years time)

Any company that does not accept monthly payments

Accepting only quarterly or yearly payments may be a sign of a company with cashflow problems.

Any company that gives misleading sales messages to attract your custom

For example, the headline sales message of one leading insurance company is that they specifically protect your equipment against water and fire damage. They say they will fix it whatever the problem is. Yet their small print tells you that damage or costs caused by water, dampness, condensation or fire are specifically excluded.
